Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed that former Reds forward Eric Cantona is his idol.
The German joined Man United this summer, elaving Bayern Munich having been at the German champions his whole life. Schweinsteiger decided to make the move and it is easy to see why if he did, in fact, enjoy watching Cantona. The Frenchman is a United legend thanks to his performances under Ferguson, helping the Reds win countless trophies after he came to Old Trafford from Leeds United.
United supporters will be delighted to hear that their midfield maestro respects a legend of the club almost as much as they do. Schweinsteiger is quickly becoming a fan favourite amongst the Stretford End and will be hoping that he can leave a similar mark on the club that Cantona did in the ’90’s.
The 31-year-old said in a Q&A with Beats by Dre that Cantona was the one player he admired and wished he could play with. It would ahve been quite something seeing the pair together, with the class of Schweinsteiger and Cantona’s flair. They would have been a joy to watch and it will be something United fans wish they could have seen.
Schweinsteiger must now turn his attention to his first Manchester derby on Sunday, knowing that his team need a win. Three points will take them above Manchester City in the Premier League table and the World Cup winner could be key to United’s chances by dominating the midfield and controlling the tempo of the game. If the midfielder is on form, United will know that they have a great chance of getting one over their city rivals and sending out a statement to the rest of the league.
