The 25-year-old helped Man United keep a clean sheet in the derby on Sunday, shutting down Kevin De Bruyne and Jesus Navas in a game where many felt he would struggle.
It’s been a slow season so far for Rojo having as he’s had to work extra hard on his fitness after being given a longer summer break following an intense 2015 Copa America with Argentina, but van Gaal is satisfied with how he is doing.
Speaking about Rojo after the game, van Gaal said: “Rojo played a very good match, not only against De Bruyne but also against Jesus Navas. He had very good passes and very good crosses so I am very satisfied with him.
“It is only his third game this season; he has hardly played for 90 minutes. It is maybe the first time he has played for 90 minutes. I am very happy that at last he has the condition to play a full match.”
Questions were asked about Rojo ahead of the Everton and City games but he played very well in both. CSKA Moscow exposed him but that was a tough night in which not many put in a good performance, so we won’t lambast him for that.
Whoever steps in for Luke Shaw this season won’t be able to fully replace him because he was superb for us but if Rojo’s last two Premier League games are anything to go by, it looks like van Gaal has got himself a very strong replacement in Rojo.
