Manchester United defender Phil Jones was left frustrated following his side’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.
Both teams seemed to cancel each other out during the clash, although Man United certainly had the better of the chances.
The home side struggled to break through the City defence despite their constant possession and closing down. United won the ball back off City with ease throughout the afternoon but couldn’t make their rivals pay as the Sky Blues went top of the Premier league.
Jones had kept his place in the starting lineup alongside Chris Smalling at centre-back and the pair were formidable once again, keeping their second clean sheet in as many Premier League games. Wilfried Bony, playing up front for City, barely had a kick but the defender was disappointed not to come away with all three points.
“We took the game to them in the second half but it wasn’t to be.” Jones said.
Despite the result, United will be content with their display. City have been free scoring in the league and were coming into the game having scored 11 goals in their last two league outings. It is a testament to how well the back four did but they will be regretting not taking their chances.
It is a good performance to build on going into other big games as Louis van Gaal continues to get his tactics right in derbies. United were compact and disciplined at the back and City never looked like scoring, something that will certainly please the manager.
Despite the good showing, Jones and his team will know that it is two points dropped, given the way the game panned out. They will now look towards the game against Crystal Palace next week to ensure they get all three points and keep tabs on their city rivals who are top of the league.
