Chris Smalling backs Phil Jones to kick on at Manchester United

Chris Smalling believes Phil Jones is capable of proving his value for Manchester United and England if he stays free from injury and gets a run of games under his belt.

Smalling has really kicked on this season and is widely considered to be one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Jones is now feeling his way back into the side having missed the start of the campaign through injury.

Smalling insisted Jones is capable of improving in the same way that he has.

“We have been together from the England U21s and being around the same age, I think you do just click and get on”, Smalling said.

“We both have confidence in ourselves. I knew that this time would come and I could get a good year to show what a good player I am and I think he has got the same confidence in himself that he can stay away from injuries and he can show everyone as well.”

Smalling suffered early on in his career due to injury and being played out of position and Jones is going through an equally frustrating time at United. Smalling has kicked on and there is no reason why Jones can’t, although he is running out of time to make his mark at Old Trafford.
