Viv Anderson: Wayne Rooney will ‘come out the other side’ following poor Manchester United form

by Tanveer Arayan

Former Manchester United defender Viv Anderson has backed Wayne Rooney to come through his bad patch of form.

Rooney has been in awful form since the start of the campaign and there have been numerous calls from supporters for the captain to be dropped.

However, Louis van Gaal has so far persisted with Rooney, who seemingly has an undroppable status at Old Trafford.

Anderson believes van Gaal is doing the right thing in continuing to include Rooney in the starting XI.

“His record speaks for itself and he doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody. I would pick Wayne Rooney every time because on any given day he could score a hat-trick. He’ll only get through this spell by playing,” Anderson said.

‘If you’re going through a bad time at a big club, whether it is Wayne Rooney or [Chelsea’s] Diego Costa, you are always going to get stick. That’s part and parcel of being captain of Manchester United and England. When you don’t score 20 goals on a regular basis some people are going to ask questions. He has been through this many, many times and he’ll come out the other side.’

Rooney has been consistently poor for a number of months now and it is hard to see when he will return to form, if at all. His performances have often been detrimental to the team as it means players in better form such as Anthony Martial have been forced into awkward positions in order to accommodate the Englishman. Rooney has been a fantastic servant to United but there will come a time sooner rather than later when enough is enough.
