Manchester United fans divided by Memphis Depay’s display against Middlesbrough

Memphis Depay had a night to forget as Manchester United were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.

The Dutchman was left frustrated by a stubborn Middlesbrough defence and he often found himself dispossessed while running at the opposition. He was eventually replaced by Anthony Martial after 70 minutes played.

Memphis has endured a difficult start to life at Man United following his summer move from PSV Eindhoven and his display against Middlesbrough did nothing to help his cause.

Some supporters criticised Memphis while others leapt to his defence:

It is clear that there is a talent in Memphis and he will need time but patience wears thin at a club like United, where every player is expected to perform in every game.

Louis van Gaal has handled a number of young players during his long career and it is likely that he will know exactly what to do with Memphis. His time will come, although it is unclear if he will keep his place in the starting XI in the short term.
