Zinedine Zidane has compared Anthony Martial to Gianluigi Buffon in an attempt to justify the £36m fee Manchester United paid for the young Frenchman.
Martial was made the most expensive teenager ever when Man United signed him from Monaco on transfer deadline day.
Eyebrows were raised because of the fee but Martial has made a hugely impressive start to life at Old Trafford.
Zidane compared the situation to that of Gianluigi Buffon’s, who became the most expensive goalkeeper ever when Juventus bought him for £32.6m in 2001.
“With transfer fees, what looks big now can look like nothing a few years down the line,” Zidane said.
“People went crazy when Juventus spent all that money for Gianluigi Buffon – how could a goalkeeper be worth that much? Who can now look and say Buffon was anything other than one of the greatest buys ever?”
Martial has been in blistering form for United and it’s safe to say that there are no question marks over his fee now. While the Frenchman still has a long way to go, the sky really is the limit in terms of what he can achieve.
