The Frenchman is without doubt Man United’s most influential central midfielder and has become a key player in the middle of the park, so to have him missing for an important game would be a blow for Louis van Gaal.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick are both very good midfielders in their own right but neither have the energy or drive of Schneiderlin, so he’s irreplaceable in that respect. Ander Herrera is a very different type of midfielder, so we’re not counting him for that deep lying position in midfield.
If Schneiderlin is out, it will likely be a midfield partnership of Schweinsteiger and Carrick, unless van Gaal decides to play Marouane Fellaini in a defensive midfield role.
We’ll bring you updates from van Gaal’s press conference where he will no doubt be questioned about Schneiderlin and we’re hoping his absence has nothing to do with an injury.
