Phil Jones returns to Manchester United squad for CSKA Moscow

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Phil Jones is fit and available for Manchester United’s game against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old defender was dropped from Man United’s match-day squad to face Crystal Palace this weekend as his fitness wasn’t up to scratch but the weekend off has been long enough for him to recover and make an immediate return.

Fans let out a collective sigh when Jones was missing this weekend due to more fitness concerns but it’s good to hear that it was seemingly nothing more than fatigue.

Phil Jones has replaced him [Tuanzebe] and Phil Jones is returning in the selection, so my preference is for Phil Jones,” van Gaal told MUTV.

Jones is fit, Jones is injured, Jones is fit, Jones is injured. Repeat cycle.

That’s what United fans have got used to over the years so you can forgive the feeling of ‘oh, again?’ when Jones was missing from the squad to face Crystal Palace – but he’s got over this minor problem very quickly.

It’s all about momentum with Jones in much the same way as it was for Smalling. If he can, and it’s a big if, get a consistent run of games under his belt then who knows? Maybe he’ll follow in Chris’ footsteps, but it all depends on him staying fit for longer than two or three games.
