Paul Scholes has slammed Ashley Young‘s ‘bad habit’ of diving and has labelled it as an embarrassing aspect of his game which he needs to get rid of.
The Man United winger overzealously went down following a tackle from a CSKA Moscow defender and the referee deemed it to be a goal kick after pondering his options for a moment or two.
Replays showed Young’s leg trailed into the CSKA Moscow defender and it certainly looked like he was playing for the foul. It’s an aspect of his game which was a big problem a couple of seasons ago but up until this example, it hadn’t happened for a while.
Scholes is right in this regard and it’s not something Young should let come back into his game. He’s improved so much under Louis van Gaal that it would be a shame to see his reputation as a diver rear its ugly head.
Sometimes players will win penalties by playing for the foul but it’s just not worth it in the long-term, so hopefully Young won’t pick up his bad habit on a regular occasion again.
