The 19-year-old was well enough to go to a Halloween party on Saturday night and van Gaal is very happy with how he is recovering at the moment.
Writing an update in his pre-match programme notes, van Gaal said: “Finally I would like to give you all an update on Luke Shaw as his recovery is something I am asked about a lot by fans.
“Luke is progressing well and is doing as well as we could have hoped at this stage. We are not putting any timings on his recovery or a return, as it is important that we allow nature to take its course.
“Luke is working hard during his recuperation to keep his body in the best possible condition. He is receiving plenty of messages of encouragement from supporters, which I know he appreciates.”

It’s all going in the right direction for Shaw at the moment and fans are hoping there are no complications but all he can do is continue working hard.
When Shaw was injured we all knew that he’d be a big loss but I don’t think anybody realised just how much of a miss his overlapping runs would be on the left. Without them, we’ve lost a real attacking spark.
In his absence, Marcos Rojo will continue to play at left-back but as soon as Shaw is back and available for selection in the future, he’ll come back into this United side and we’ll be stronger for it.
