Inter Milan goalkeeper Samir Handanovic could have moved to Manchester United this summer had David de Gea left for Real Madrid, according to the Slovenian’s agent.
De Gea was linked with a move to Madrid for a number of months but a move collapsed on the last day of the Spanish transfer window due to late paperwork.
Handanovic has been in excellent form for Inter this season having kept seven clean sheets in 11 Serie A games.
The keeper’s agent, Federico Pastorello, admitted Man United identified Handanovic as a potential replacement for De Gea.
“Now [he] is preparing to extend [his] fight with Inter and he is very happy.”
Handanovic would have been a more than capable replacement for De Gea but, to the relief of United fans everywhere, the club managed to get the Spaniard to stay, although it was more by luck than judgement. However, it is unclear whether or not De Gea will leave next summer and it would not be a surprise to see United reignite their interest in Handanovic if he did.
