Rooney has come under fire from fans and pundits alike for some subpar displays over the course of the campaign.
However, he did bag a crucial winner in Man United’s 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.
Solskjaer, who played with Rooney at United, backed his former teammate to bounce back at Old Trafford.
“Wayne’s a legend at the club, he’s been fantastic since he arrived. He might thank me for getting that injury as we needed strikers back then when I got injured, so we signed him,” Solskjaer said.
“But he’s been a top, top teammate of mine, he’s a great lad and I wish him all the best. Wazza will go in the history books as one of the best players to have ever played for Manchester United and England. You know when you’ve got Wayne Rooney, wherever you put him, you’ll get a top, top performance. You could even put him in goal.”
Rooney’s goal against CSKA moved him up to joint second in the all-time goalscoring charts for United. He now has 237 goals for the club, level with Denis Law. Whatever happens with Rooney’s form between now and the end of the season, it is important for fans to remember he is a legend at United and should be treated as such.
