Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo believes that Memphis Depay is in the same bracket as Barcelona forward Neymar.
Memphis has got off to an indifferent start to life at Man United and has, more recently, been dropped from the team.
The 21-year-old was a regular starter earlier in the season but has not been on the pitch from the start of a game since the 3-0 loss to Arsenal before the international break. Memphis has been restricted to coming off the bench since then and things just do not seem to be going his way.
So far this season, the Dutchman has shown nothing to prove that he is in the same league as Neymar, making Ronaldo’s comments confusing. The Barcelona man has proven just what he is capable of on the biggest stages, scoring in a Champions League final but Ronaldo still feels that Memphis is just as good in terms of his potential.
“You see many players with potential,” he said.
“Hazard for example, the No.7 of Manchester, Depay, is a good player too, Paul Pogba and maybe Neymar. I will mention Martin Odegaard of Madrid for example, at 16 he’s still young but you can see he’s a very good player.”
It is a huge claim from the Portuguese but is a clear indication of how highly he rates Memphis. The former PSV Eindhoven man came to Old Trafford full of confidence and optimism but that has slowly deteriorated as time has gone on. Memphis was tipped to be ‘the new Ronaldo’ but his start to life in the Premier League has been far from ideal.
Memphis will know he has a lot of work to put in if he is to get to Neymar’s level. The Brazilian is achieving great things at a young age for Barcelona, something Memphis will surely want to do at United. He certainly, as Ronaldo says, has the potential but it is up to him to see whether he can realise it.
