The Ecuadorian winger was substituted in the Manchester derby a couple of weeks ago with what looked like a thigh injury but it may well have been something different if surgery is necessary.
Valencia already underwent surgery during the summer in order to remove screws from his ankle which were inserted following his horror leg break back in 2010, and maybe this has something to do with that.

With Valencia out injured and Matteo Darmian suspended, van Gaal has a decision to make as to who plays against West Brom at right-back.
Ashley Young is probably the most likely option as he’s played there before but it still leaves United with a weakness in that role.
Valencia might not be our first choice right-back by any stretch of the imagination but we’re certainly hoping he doesn’t need surgery, because he is an important member of the squad, if only as cover for Darmian.
