Memphis Depay now faces Jesse Lingard competition at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Memphis Depay can expect to find life at the club even tougher now that he has competition for his place in the side.

Depay was one of the first names on the teamsheet at the start of the season as he started games on a weekly basis. The Dutchman never seemed to hit the heights that were expected of him when he first signed this summer from PSV Eindhoven. At first, it was put down to him trying to adapt to the Premier League but as time went on, the Dutchman struggled more and more. He was eventually dropped after the 3-0 loss to Arsenal and has been unable to win back his place in the side.

The main reason for this has been the rise to prominence of Jesse Lingard. The 22-year-old has burst onto the scene this season and is quickly making himself undroppable. His strike against West Brom at the Stretford End was another indication of how far he has come this season and it is hard to see Louis van Gaal replacing the youngster.

It provides yet another obstacle in the way for Memphis as he tries to really kickstart his Man United career. The 21-year-old can’t complain about a lack of opportunities and van Gaal is not the only one who has seen a dip in his performances. Memphis has been dropped from the Dutch national team by manager Danny Blind and it is clear that he is going through a tough time on the football pitch.

Memphis, however, can learn from Lingard and try and emulate his success. The Englishman was out of favour at the start of the season and was struggling to even get himself into a matchday squad. It is clear that he has put in the hard work and impressed van Gaal who has in turn rewarded him with ample opportunities. Lingard hasn’t disappointed and is now probably ahead of Depay in the pecking order.

Memphis has seen first-hand what happens when a player gets his head down, puts in the hard work and does everything they can to get into the team. He must now do the same and try get back on his manager’s good side, in order to get his United career back on track.
