Herrera was dropped for Man United’s last two victories against CSKA Moscow and West Bromwich Albion as van Gaal preferred Wayne Rooney in the No.10 role.
The decision has been a source of frustration for United fans as Rooney has been poor this season.
Herrera admitted van Gaal is “demanding” but insisted that he is the right man to lead the club.
“He’s a very demanding person, very forward and very sincere, which I value a lot. To you guys (the press), he might seem a bit tough, but I think he’s a good guy and I think he wants what’s best for the club,” Herrera said.
“On a personal level, I have a very good relationship with him. I know he can look tough from outside the club, but from within, he’s the right guy to help us improve.”
Van Gaal has shown during his time in charge of United that he cares little for reputation or fan pressure when it comes to team selection. It is unlikely that this will change anytime soon and all that Herrera can do is continue to work hard on the training ground before grabbing his opportunity when he gets it.
