Memphis Depay has revealed that he has put on five kilos since joining Manchester United.
The 21-year-old joined Man United from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of around £31m this summer but has so far struggled to make much of an impact at Old Trafford.
Despite not producing the goods on the pitch as of yet, the Dutchman has insisted he is working hard off the pitch on his physique.
“Since I joined Manchester United I’ve gained five kilos,” Memphis said.
“And that’s not fat. Only muscle mass. It’s pretty bizarre. It’s also due to the heavy rhythm in England. I now weigh 85 kilos. When I stood on the scales first I thought, ‘OK, do you?’ My body is still developing. Now I’m a little heavier. I work a lot on my co-ordination and starting speed.”
Regardless of Memphis’ disappointing displays in a United shirt so far, it is pleasing to hear of his commitment to the club off the pitch too, with a strong physique needed to cope with the physical nature of the Premier League.
The 21-year-old’s performance against Club Brugge in the Champions League earlier this term proves that he has the talent, and hopefully it is just a matter of time before he recreates such performances in the Premier League – something which could prove to be extremely useful if United and van Gaal have their eyes set on multiple honours this year.
