David James feels David de Gea is crucial to Manchester United’s title hopes

Former England goalkeeper David James has talked up the impact David De Gea could have at Manchester United this season.

The goalkeeper’s move to Real Madrid fell through on transfer deadline day this summer, before he went on to sign a new contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2019. The resolution of the transfer that had plagued the back pages all summer meant the Spaniard could finally be reintegrated back into the Man United side and he hasn’t disappointed since.

De Gea has been the Reds’ player of the season for the past two years and has already made some crucial saves this season. Against both Crystal Palace and CSKA Moscow, the stopper kept United in the game with stunning saves with the score at 0-0 and he has been a stalwart since returning to the team.

James feels he can be key to United’s title hopes this season as he told manutd.com: “I think David is a wonderful goalkeeper. United needed him to stay at the club in order to challenge for the title and he has kept five or six clean sheets already in the league this season.

“I was a big admirer of him when he was at Atletico. He got unwarranted criticism for his strength in the air at first but he’s sorted that out himself and he looks confident and composed. He also has 10 players in front of him who are very capable, so it puts United in a good position.”

De Gea worked past his early difficulties in the Premier League to become a top class goalkeeper and arguably one of the best in the competition. United fans will now be hoping the same can happen for new signing Sergio Romero. The Argentine has struggled since De Gea’s return to the team but James still feels he is more than capable.

He added: “And I think Sergio Romero is a great goalkeeper. The signing went under the radar a little but I like him and I think the goalkeeper position at United is strong. I just hope Liverpool fans aren’t reading this!”

There is no doubting the class De Gea possesses and he will be one of United’s most important players for the rest of the season. There were plenty of games last season where the 25-year-old almost single-handedly ensured the Reds came away with the desired result and he may need to do the same this campaign, especially in a tight title run-in.
