Daley Blind reveals he used to watch Ruud van Nistelrooy when he was at Manchester United

Manchester United defender Daley Blind has revealed how much he admires club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The striker scored 150 goals in just 209 appearances for Man United and has been one of the Reds most prolific scorers of all-time. The Dutchman was a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford and his countryman, Blind, has admitted that he was also a huge supporter.

The pair now work together for the national team, with van Nistelrooy in his capacity as assistant manager to Daley’s father, Danny Blind. The 39-year-old will be hoping he can help get the Netherlands national team back on track after they failed to qualify for the European Championships next summer but Blind is still a huge admirer of the former striker.

“Ruud was a killer striker in the box! Every chance was a goal. He was quick as a player and always had a feeling for a good position as a striker. If you knew you had him in your team, you were very happy because he scored in most games. That was his big quality – he could score goals and create chances for himself out of nothing.” Blind told ManUtd.com.

“I first met Ruud when he became the assistant manager for the Dutch team and he’s a really great person. Before that I only knew him from watching him in the past at the big clubs he played at, including, of course, United.”

Blind also revealed that, even at 39 years of age, van Nistelrooy still has the predatory striker’s instinct that he has during his five illustrious years at Old Trafford.

He added: “It’s funny now when we do some finishing exercises with the national team because you still see that he gets the ball, takes a shot and it’s in. It’s very impressive.”

Blind and van Nistelrooy will have their focus turned to Holland’s friendly against Germany on Tuesday, despite having nothing to play for. It was a game arranged in order for preparation for next summer’s Euros, but with the Dutch not going to be at the tournament, it is an opportunity for many players to get a run out.

United fans will be hoping to see Memphis Depay in action in order to get some minutes under his belt. The youngster has fallen out of favour at his club recently and the chance to impress against the world champions could be exactly what he needs to stand up and be counted once again.
