David Beckham has revealed he was “honoured” to wear the famous No.7 shirt for Manchester United.
Beckham wore the shirt between 1997 and 2003, joining the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo in receiving the honour.
Memphis Depay currently holds the number but has so far struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford.
Beckham reminded Memphis that the shirt carries with it “a huge amount of history”.
“It comes with a huge amount of history: Georgie Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, Cristiano, it is like No. 10 for Argentina, it is a special number,” he said.
”I was honoured to wear it for the time I did. My boyhood hero was Bryan Robson so it was a huge honour to wear it.”
Memphis has a long way to go if he is to join the likes of Beckham and Best in the list of great players who have worn the No.7 shirt. United have had a series of disappointing No.7s as of late in players such as Angel di Maria and Michael Owen and the hope is that Memphis can buck the trend.
