International Reds: Martial outshone by Rooney on emotional night at Wembley

by Sam Peoples

There were plenty of Manchester United players in action tonight with their respective countries in the international break.

Wayne Rooney scored a well taken volley in England’s 2-0 win over France on an emotional night at Wembley and completed the full 90 minutes, while Phil Jones came on for the last couple of minutes.

Chris Smalling and Jesse Lingard were left on the bench by Roy Hodgson, so Lingard will have to wait for his England debut.

Anthony Martial played just under 70 minutes and Morgan Schneiderlin was taken off after 83 minutes, so it’s good to see both players getting plenty of game time without injury.

Matteo Darmian played the full 90 minutes in Italy’s 2-2 draw against Romania at right-back.

David de Gea, Juan MataMemphis Depay and Daley Blind were all supposed to play but their respective games – Belgium vs Spain and Germany vs Netherlands – were cancelled due to security concerns amid heightened measures following the devastating events in Paris on Friday.
