Manchester United have made Mario Gomez their top target for the January transfer window, according to the Express.
Gomez is currently on loan at Besiktas from Fiorentina, where he has scored eight goals in 11 league appearances.
Louis van Gaal worked with Gomez at Bayern Munich between 2009 and 2011 and is said to be keen on linking up with his former striker again.
Any deal would be dependent on Besiktas agreeing to end Gomez’s loan deal early but van Gaal is determined to try.
Wayne Rooney has struggled up top for United this season and the club are reportedly keen on strengthening the position.
If van Gaal really is interested in Gomez, it is a confusing decision given the fact he let Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie leave this summer. Gomez is clearly a quality player but at 30 years old, he might not be the best long-term option.
