Xavi Hernandez backs Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney to bounce back

Barcelona legend Xavi believes Wayne Rooney will bounce back from his poor form at Manchester United.

Rooney has come under fire following some poor performances this term and there have been calls for him to be dropped from the starting XI.

However, Xavi backed Rooney to turn things around at Old Trafford, citing Andres Iniesta as an example of a player who has improved following a poor patch.

When asked if Rooney has struggled this season, Xavi said: ”A little, but [Rooney] scored an important goal (against CSKA Moscow). He’ll be back. Footballers go through stages when things don’t go well, it might be a few months, look at [Andres] Iniesta last season.

“People were critical of him; they said he wasn’t the same player. What happened in the Champions League final, the biggest game? He was fantastic. But if you score an important goal then your confidence can soar. Confidence is the greatest variable in life, not just in football.”

Rooney’s poor form hasn’t just a blip – he has been consistently subpar for a number of months now.

There has to come a time sooner rather than later when Louis van Gaal questions his place in the team. Anthony Martial has looked far more threatening this season and United’s success could depend on whether or not Rooney is dropped to the bench.
