Neymar’s father admits doubt over Brazilian’s future at Barcelona due to tax issues

The father of Barcelona forward Neymar has admitted that the Brazilian’s future at the Spanish club is in doubt due to tax issues.

The 23-year-old is in talks over a new contract at Barcelona having been linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer.

However, Neymar has been embroiled in a number of tax controversies in Spain for the past 18 months.

The player’s father, Neymar Snr, admitted the uncertainty could affect where Neymar’s future lies.

“We’ve begun contract renewal talks, but there are outstanding issues that concern us, and which need to be resolved”, he said.

“We shouldn’t be having to put up with this uncertainty regarding our taxes and whether we are going about things in the right way. We need to find out whether Spain is accepting of our situation. It’s not easy for us because we’re getting it from all sides, from both the Brazilian and the Spanish tax systems.

“We’re speaking with all of these parties to try to work out how we should deal with this issue, because what we don’t want is to still be in Spain two, three, four, five or ten years down the line and to then receive a nasty surprise. We own the Neymar brand, which has been running as a business since 2006, and we need the peace of mind that comes from knowing that everything is in order.

“We need to do things properly, and ascertain whether in Spain we’ll be allowed to carry out our work. I don’t want to use the word persecution, but if the working environment here is not a good one, we won’t be able to remain in Spain and will have to leave the country. If we’re a source of problems for Spain, we can’t stay here. We’ve never experienced such major tax issues.”

Neymar has been in sparkling form for Barcelona as of late in the absence of the injured Lionel Messi. His father’s outburst will no doubt alert Man United and they would be wise to take advantage of any uncertainty as Neymar would go a long way to making them a force in world football once again.
