Manchester United’s Ashley Young looking forward to Watford return

by Sam Koster

Manchester United’s Ashley Young is relishing his return to former club Watford on Saturday.

The 30-year-old England international started his career at Vicarage Road and helped the hornets achieve promotion in 2006, after which he completed an £8m move to Aston Villa in January 2007.

Manchester United will travel to Watford for Saturday’s early kick-off, and Young has insisted that he only holds fond memories of his boyhood club.

“I’m really looking forward to going back. It’s the club where I started and learnt my trade and, hopefully, it’ll be a nice reception… a better one than I get at Aston Villa anyway!” he joked.

“There will be quite a lot of my family going to the game, so it’ll be nice to go back. I started at Watford when I was 10 and left at 21, so I was there for a long time. It set me up and helped me get to where I am today and I thank everyone who was there at the time who I worked with.”

As with so many others, Young experienced a very poor season under the leadership of David Moyes a few seasons ago, and was often the butt of many fans’ jokes, something which prompted speculation that he would be let go.

However, under Louis van Gaal, Young has reignited his United career, and has shown on many occasions that he can be an important player when called upon, something that was particularly noticeable towards the end of last season, where his form was good enough to keep the likes of Angel di Maria out of the team.

With the likes of Memphis Depay still struggling to adapt to life in England, Young no doubt will again have an important role to play throughout the season.
