Man United are currently in the midst of an injury crisis, with Anthony Martial, Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney all out of the game against Watford this weekend.
With Rooney and Martial out, the obvious candidate to replace them up top would be Wilson but van Gaal confirmed that the youngster is not fully fit.
Speaking to reporters this morning, van Gaal said: “Wilson is okay after the international break. He can play but he cannot play a whole match because he doesn’t have the rhythm of the game.”
Wilson has only made two appearances all season against Arsenal and Middlesbrough.
Van Gaal may now be regretting his decision not to give the 19-year-old more game time over the course of the campaign as it is not immediately clear who can play up top against Watford.
Memphis Depay will be hopeful of filling the role but the Dutchman has struggled for form this term and his confidence is shot. That being said, van Gaal doesn’t have the luxury of choice and he may be forced to turn to some of his fringe players.
