Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal without six players for Watford clash

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal faces a selection headache for the game against Watford this weekend with no fewer than six players sidelined for the clash.

Anthony Martial and Michael Carrick will both be unavailable after picking up injuries over the international break while playing for France and England, respectively.

Antonio Valencia has undergone surgery on a foot injury and will likely be out of action for some time, while Wayne Rooney is suffering from illness.

Marouane Fellaini is struggling with an unspecified injury and Luke Shaw remains out having suffered a double leg break earlier this term.

James Wilson, meanwhile, may not be fit enough to complete 90 minutes having only made two brief appearances this season.

Van Gaal has often talked about the virtues of having a small squad as it allows younger players to have a better chance of breaking through.

His mantra will be tested for the game at Vicarage Road as he will be forced to turn to players who are out of form or on the fringe of proceedings. Memphis Depay, for example, will likely feature following a period on the substitute’s bench due to some poor form. Whoever starts against Watford, every player will need to be on top form if United are to take away a positive result.
