Predicting Manchester United’s starting XI against Watford is difficult because we won’t know the confirmed injury news until Louis van Gaal‘s press conference, but here’s my take on what is our strongest XI if all the news is good.
Obviously, Anthony Martial starting up front is an absolute given. Wayne Rooney might have scored against France but nobody is under any illusion as to who our best centre-forward is right now – Martial. Rooney can operate in the No.10 role.
Jesse Lingard keeping his spot on the left-wing is also pretty crucial because his direct and confident style has helped Man United increase the tempo in attack, more so than any other player other than Martial in that position.
Juan Mata out on the right-wing is a match that fits and continues to provide. His goals and assists tally this season says it all – he’s one of our best game-changers this year and we should be starting him every game when fit.
In defence, Matteo Darmian returns after his suspension and I really hope he can re-find the form he showed before his performance against Arsenal.
Phil Jones or Daley Blind is the main question I’d say with this team and for me I want to see Jones/Smalling building their partnership. Blind, as good as he has been, will never be our permanent centre-back so we shouldn’t rely on him.
Knowing our luck, Martial will be out injured and that would change things but if the injury news is positive, this is what I think is our strongest XI to face Watford.
