Memphis Depay must take advantage of Manchester United’s injury crisis against Watford

Memphis Depay will likely have the opportunity to stake his claim for a starting spot at Manchester United during the match against Watford this weekend.

Louis van Gaal is having to contend with something of an injury crisis at the club, with Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini all sidelined.

The glut of absentees opens the door for Memphis, who has struggled for game time at Man United since losing his place in the starting XI following the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in October.

Memphis was used by van Gaal in a central position during the pre-season tour of the United States of America and he may be asked to take up the role again with both Martial and Rooney out.

The Dutchman certainly has the ability – that has never been in doubt – but his decision making and tendency to keep hold of the ball too long has frustrated the Old Trafford faithful at times over the course of the campaign.

If van Gaal does call on Memphis, he will be hoping for a similar performance to the one the 21-year-old produced against Club Brugge earlier this term. Memphis was in scintillating form as he scored two and set up another as United secured a 3-1 win. He will need to grab any opportunity he gets with both hands as he continues to adapt to the Premier League.
