De Gea, as expected, was in fine form for the trip to London and had to be at the top of his game to ensure Man United left with all three points. Having taken the lead early, United were under pressure for much of the second half. The Spaniard’s goal was bombarded with attempts but he was equal to everything the Hornets threw at him.
The 25-year-old made an incredible reaction save after a deflection off Chris Smalling in the second half and it looked as if he would go unbeaten all day. However, he was unable to keep out Troy Deeney’s penalty late on to concede for the first time in over 10 hours of football.
Schweinsteiger heaped praise on the ‘keeper after his stunning performance: “David is one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Schweinsteiger told BT Sport. “We’re happy that he stayed here and he made a lot of good saves, today and also in previous games.
“You need a good goalkeeper when you want to win something.”
De Gea has been United’s most consistent performer over the past few seasons and, since pledging his future to Old Trafford earlier this season, has picked up where he left off last year. The shot-stopper once again proved that he is one of the best in the business against Watford and will be delighted to hear what Schweinsteiger thinks of his performances.
The World Cup winner can definitely appreciate a good goalkeeper, having played with Manuel Neur for a number of years and his comments about De Gea prove just how highly he and the rest of the team think of their last line of defence.
