Jesse Lingard continues to prove his worth to Manchester United

by Sid Choudhary

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard continued his extended run in the first team during the Reds 2-1 win at Watford.

The youngster started on the left wing with both Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney unavailable and was in the thick of the action throughout. With Man United going 1-0 up early on, the focus was on securing the win and Lingard had plenty of chances to do just that. The Englishman was twice through one on one with Heurelho Gomes but couldn’t beat the keeper on either occasion.

It seemed as if United would live to rue Lingard’s missed chances when Watford equalised but the 22-year-old’s shot was parried into the path of Bastian Schweinsteiger who secured the win for the Reds in the dying minutes. It was an indifferent performance from Lingard who was unable to maintain his high level of performance throughout the 90 minutes.

United fans were happy to see him in the starting lineup again and made their feelings known:

Lingard’s run in the side has been down to his impressive displays and hard work on the training ground. Since coming on as a half-time substitute against Everton last month, the United academy graduate has worked his way to becoming an important part of the first team squad. Lingard now finds himself starting games on a regular basis and it is easy to see why, given his form.

However, he proved against Watford that he still has a lot to learn before he is the finished article. The inability to put away crucial chances could have cost his side dearly. Thankfully, Schweinsteiger was on hand to rescue the three points but Lingard will want to ensure that the next time he gets the chance to finish a game off, he is able to put the contest to rest.
