Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was full of praise for his team following their late win against Watford.
The Reds took an early lead but were pulled back to 1-1 with just four minutes of normal time remaining after Tory Deeney dispatched his penalty past David De Gea. it looked as if Man United would have to settle for a point but the side showed great impetus as soon as they were back on level terms.
United pushed forward desperate for a winner and were rewarded when Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s shot was turned into his own net by Deeney. It was like the United of old, fighting for the win right until the very end and the winner, which came on the 90 minute mark, could be a huge moment going forward this season.
Van Gaal was delighted with the spirit shown by the players on a difficult day and he told ManUtd.com after the match: “I was amazed at the spirit in our team. We had the late penalty [against us] but, as a team, we created another three possibilities in five minutes after that.
“Before the goal from Schweiny [Bastian Schweinsteiger], Chris Smalling had a fantastic shot at goal and [Heurelho] Gomes saved it fantastically. When you can do that as a team, then I am very proud of that team.”
It was obvious just how much the goal meant to all the players, who celebrated it with immense passion. The team showed great character to bounce back after being brought back to 1-1 and it was an indication that the side will do whatever it takes to win all three points every week.
With United not playing the fluid attacking football that many would like to see, it is crucial they get the results to back up Van Gaal’s desired style of play. If the team continue to display such good spirit for the rest of the season, there is no reason why United can’t be top of the pile come the end of the campaign.
