Ajax manager Frank de Boer has compared Memphis Depay’s early Manchester United career to Cristiano Ronaldo’s start at the club.
Memphis has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his move from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.
The Dutchman had been dropped to the substitute’s bench by Louis van Gaal in recent weeks but he scored on his return to the starting XI against Watford last weekend. De Boer believes that Memphis could emulate Ronaldo as the two went through similarly tough periods during their early careers at Man United.
“Cristiano Ronaldo did not directly reach the summit when he [first] came to Manchester United,” De Boer said.
“I remember that there was much doubt about whether he would make it. He was primarily criticised for his weird antics and mocked as a circus act – but look where he is now.
“Memphis has the potential to succeed at the very top, but there are still some things to look at.
“Can he withstand a set-back? Is he prepared to roll up his sleeves when it doesn’t come so easy? Is he self-critical?”
Ronaldo was seen of something as a show pony during his early years at United before he developed into the world-class talent he is today. Memphis has a huge amount of potential and it is not too far fetched to imagine him following a similar trajectory as he continues to find his feet at Old Trafford.
