Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra: Sir Alex Ferguson was ‘99%’ sure of Cristiano Ronaldo return

Patrice Evra has revealed that he asked Cristiano Ronaldo to rejoin Manchester United and that Sir Alex Ferguson was “99%” sure the Portuguese would return to the club.

Ronaldo joined Man United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 before leaving for Real Madrid six years later.

Evra, meanwhile, joined Juventus last year after a long and successful career at United. The Frenchman admitted Ronaldo still holds the club in high regard.

When asked if he had spoke to Ronaldo, Evra said: ”Yeah, yeah. A lot. And he said ‘but for the moment I don’t know’.”

“When I was talking with him he said ‘but you know the way I love Manchester United’. And I remember he said when we played for Madrid at Old Trafford (in 2013) ‘all the night I couldn’t sleep, my nose was bleeding from the emotion’. I remember when he came onto the pitch and I saw the way the fans stood for him, it was just amazing.”

“Before Ferguson left we talked maybe two weeks before. He said ‘Patrice, I will be here for another five years, easy’. I was like ‘yes boss, let’s do it’. I was so convinced.

“He was looking younger and younger, it was amazing. He even told me 99% Cristiano Ronaldo will come (back). I was like ‘wow, we are ready to bounce back and win the Champions League again’.”

United supporters have dreamt of Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford for some time now but it looked like a move would be unlikely. However, Louis van Gaal recently admitted that he is interested in securing Ronaldo’s services.

The Portuguese has been flirting with a move away from Madrid for a number of weeks now, with Paris Saint-Germain also said to be interested in him. While a transfer would be incredibly difficult to pull off, it’s safe to say that fans would be over the moon if the club managed to bring him back to Manchester.
