An anonymous player at Manchester United has told Telegraph reporter Jason Burt that he is “half the player he can be” under Louis van Gaal.
Man United were dismal against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night as they were held to a 0-0 draw.
The result left van Gaal’s side needing a win in their final group stage fixture against Wolfsburg in a fortnight’s time. Burt revealed that one particular player at United is suffering from van Gaal’s tactics at Old Trafford.
“I spoke to one player at United who told me he is half the player he can be due to the way they are playing,” Burt said.
“He doesn’t feel it is fair on him or the fans that he can’t express himself properly and he finds it very difficult here.”
Is it true? If we’re to believe so, then there are a number of candidates as a few squad members who have suffered under van Gaal in recent months.
Marouane Fellaini, for instance, has been used as a bit part player by the veteran manager this season, not to mention Memphis Depay who is struggling or even Ander Herrera who has been left out of the team so often. It could even be Wayne Rooney, who has looked a shadow of his former self at points this term.
Either way, these sorts of stories sum up United at the moment – it’s all a bit of a mysterious mess. Somehow we’re second in the league but at times we’re playing football which wouldn’t go amiss in the Conference.
