Van Gaal’s Man United side have been criticised at points this season following some turgid attacking displays, most recently in the 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven in midweek.
However, United are second in the Premier League and will go top if they beat Leicester City on Saturday. Ferdinand insisted he can see similarities in Ferguson’s and van Gaal’s respective styles.
“When I was a player my main aim was to win a trophy first and win it playing exciting football second, and that seems to be van Gaal’s too,” Ferdinand said.
“Certainly during the final three seasons under Sir Alex it was more a case of us getting over the line than anything cavalier. However, there was certainly a lot more ambition and threat in our play than there is currently with United.”
Van Gaal has had a long and successful career in management at the very highest level and he will be fully aware of the team’s troubles in front of goal.
He has tried a number of combinations with his personnel in an attempt to fix the problem but nothing seems to be working. He will have to find a solution and quickly if United are to be successful this season, and you get the sense that the January transfer window will be a crucial one for the club.
