Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal reverted to a 3-5-2 formation against Leicester City on Saturday but his side were still uninspiring offensively as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.
Van Gaal abandoned three at the back early in his Man United career and the game against Leicester reminded supporters why, as their side struggled to create chances in open play against the Foxes.
It is likely that van Gaal will return to a traditional four man defence against West Ham United next time out, although that will depend on the fitness of Jesse Lingard, who missed the match against Leicester:
Lingard’s running and willingness to make things happen was missed against Leicester and van Gaal will be keen for him to return as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, Ashley Young may retain his place in the side as he looked dangerous at the King Power stadium.
Matteo Darmian was less than impressive but van Gaal does not have the luxury of options at the back.
