Manchester United transfer target Thomas Muller has been warned off a move away from Bayern Munich by Lothar Matthaus.
The 26-year-old has been linked with Man United after Louis van Gaal aimed to bring in a marquee signing and they don’t come much bigger than Muller, who is one of the best attackers in world football.
Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge earlier said that Man United were wasting their time in trying to entice the German international to Old Trafford and Matthaus supports that, saying he does not need a transfer away from Bayern as he’s already playing at the highest level of football.
“He does not need Manchester United or Chelsea,” Matthaus insisted.
“My opinion is he should definitely stay at Bayern for his lifetime. He started his professional career at Bayern and I think he should end his career here.
“He does not need any new challenge as he is always playing at the highest level every year at Bayern.”
Matthaus is right that Muller is at the top of the game with Bayern but the German forward has already admitted he is tempted by the Premier League’s money, which gives United a way in.
With all the increased revenues from TV deals and new sponsorships, United are going to be able to afford most players in the world and still stay clear of any Financial Fair Play infringements.
It all depends what Muller wants to do. I’d personally be very surprised if he did leave Bayern but if Pep Guardiola does go this summer, then maybe he’d be keen to avoid another shake-up.
