Memphis came to Man United from PSV Eindhoven this summer with much fanfare but the youngster has so far struggled to make a real impact at Old Trafford.
He has been reduced to a bit-part role under Louis van Gaal and it is unclear when he will return to the form which once made him one of the most revered young talents in Europe. However, Herrera backed Memphis to succeed at the club.
“I think, of course, when you are very young, as he is, it is not so easy to always maintain your best form,” Herrera said.
“So I feel he is 21 and he has all the qualities to be a top player but he knew in advance it was not going to be easy at Manchester United. There are a lot of players who all want to play and all want to fight for their place. So Memphis has started very well but is now fighting again for a chance in the line-up. He is going to get chances because he has world-class quality.”
When Memphis arrived at United, it was generally agreed that he would need time before he truly flourished at the club.
It has panned out exactly that way so no-one should really be surprised by his slump in form. Young players need patience and Memphis will be no different. There is still plenty of time for him to come good.
