Rio Ferdinand has named Nemanja Vidic as the best defensive partner he played alongside at Manchester United.
Ferdinand and Vidic established a fearsome partnership at Man United during one of the club’s most successful ever periods.
The pair helped United win the Champions League in 2008 and they were considered to be among the world’s best centre-backs in their prime.
When asked who his best defensive partner was at United, Ferdinand said: “Vidic. We didn’t work on it in training, we could smell each other’s movement, you just knew, it was instinct.
“I knew when he was going to go tight and I’d go round and cover. I knew when he was going to drop off, I’d push in. I knew when he was in a bit of trouble, I’d always hang back and be that safety net for him. He was the best partner and favourite partner I played with.”
Ferdinand and Vidic were a supreme partnership and, along with Edwin van der Sar, it was easy to see why the team enjoyed so much success.
Louis van Gaal has established a similar defensive solidarity to United this term, with Chris Smalling and David de Gea in particular in fine form, but there are plenty of problems at the other end of the pitch. However, all great teams are built on a strong defence and van Gaal certainly has that part down to a tee.
