Ander Herrera has thanked Manchester United fans for their continued support at Old Trafford.
Herrera has been in and out of the side this season despite impressing when trusted with the responsibility of playing in the No.10 role.
The Spaniard is a firm fans’ favourite due to his performances on the pitch and his behaviour off it but it appears that van Gaal is yet to be won over. Herrera praised Man United fans in a recent interview with United Review.
When asked how it feels to have fans chanted his name at matches, Herrera said: “I just say to them ‘thank you’. I thank all the fans because they show me every day and at every game that they are supporting me.
“The only thing I can do is try to keep fighting and try to keep giving everything within me when I pull on the red shirt. I try to enjoy it. What I am doing at United, I enjoy a lot so I don’t want this dream to finish. I have to play as well as possible if I want to play as long as I can at this club.”
Herrera’s situation is a peculiar one. When he plays, United usually improve as a whole and look more threatening from an attacking point of view. However, van Gaal has generally dropped the midfielder even when he has produced a good performance in the previous game.
The notoriously methodical Dutchman may be concerned about Herrera’s tendency to take risks in trying to create chances and score goals but United fans, who have watched their team play devastating attacking football in years gone by, are desperate for those sort of players to play. Herrera will no doubt be working hard to impress van Gaal ahead of the game against West Ham United this weekend.
