Former Liverpool first-team coach Christian Damiano believes that it is too early to compare Manchester United’s Anthony Martial to Thierry Henry.
Martial made a blistering start to life at Man United after moving from Monaco on transfer deadline day and comparisons to Henry were inevitably made as a result.
However, the Frenchman’s form has dipped somewhat lately, although United as a whole have looked meek from an attacking point of view. Damiano insisted comparisons with Henry are premature.
“Martial came through very slowly into the Lyon and Monaco first teams,” he said.
“Let us say he has not gone through the same stages in his career and does not have the same experiences or the fundamentals, that served Henry for many years, yet.”
Expectations for Martial have skyrocketed and it is easy to see why. After all, he is a first-team regular for United aged just 19 which is extremely young.
However, it is important to remember that there will be ups and downs over the course of his United career. He will undoubtedly be a central figure for the club in years to come but supporters cannot expect him to produce his best every week right now at such a tender age.
