Manchester United U18s coach Paul McGuinness has praised Jesse Lingard as the 22-year-old continues to impress in the first-team.
Lingard has enjoyed a run in the starting XI under Louis van Gaal as of late after graduating from the academy system at the club.
The Englishman scored his first competitive senior goal for Man United in the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion last year and he has generally looked a livewire in the team. McGuinness praised Lingard for overcoming physical issues during his early days at the club.
“There comes a time when you know a player’s not going to be a giant, and Jesse had to adjust to being in with bigger and stronger lads,” McGuinness said.
“He was always capable of doing that because he was very brave and always brave in wanting to take the ball.”
Lingard’s performances have been a real positive for United supporters this season as the club have a rich history of bringing through young players.
Van Gaal has taken his fair share of criticism over the course of the campaign but he deserves credit for his handling of youngsters at United. Along with Lingard, the likes of Andreas Pereira, Axel Tuanzebe and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have featured in United’s matchday squads this term.
