Rooney was substituted against Leicester City last week just after the hour mark and although many felt his withdrawal was down to his performance, it now looks as if injury played a part in the decision to take him off as well.
With it being a nasty injury, there’s every chance Rooney will miss the entire festive period and that would leave Louis van Gaal with only one recognised striker in his squad.
“It’s a nasty injury,” van Gaal told reporters on Friday.
“It’s been getting worse but we have to let him train to make the ankle stronger, that’s very important. I cannot say [how long he’s out for] because the doctor shall decide that with Wayne of course. He is training well in the rehabilitation.”
United’s injury problems are causing all sorts of problems but Rooney’s absence isn’t one which should hurt us, at least in the short term.
He deserved to be left on the bench for the West Ham game but we’re now one injury to Anthony Martial away from having no recognised strikers in our squad which would be a dire situation.
Rooney is definitely going to miss the Wolfsburg game during the week but at the moment there is no diagnosis on a return past that point.
However, at the moment, does that really bother United fans? Let us know what you think in the comments.
