Guillermo Varela makes Manchester United debut with comfortable performance

Guillermo Varela made his Manchester United debut during the Reds 0-0 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old came on as a half-time substitute, replacing Paddy McNair in a straight swap in the right-back position. It was his first appearance at senior level for Man United and gave fans a glimpse of what he is all about. Varela was unable to help his teammates find a winner, as United were held to their fifth goalless draw in nine games.

The Uruguayan defender spent all of last season on loan at Real Madrid’s second team and was singled out for praise by their coach, Zinedine Zidane. Varela has shown potential during his time at United and fans were delighted to see him get the opportunity for the first team.

McNair struggled to make an impact going forward and seemed to struggle at full-back and Varela’s introduction gave the Reds a more conventional option in the position.

The former Penarol defender will be happy to have finally made his first appearance for the club and will hope it is the first of many. With McNair picking up an injury against the Hammers, Varela could find himself playing a lot more than he was expecting, especially during the busy festive period.
