Guillermo Varela in Manchester United squad to face West Ham

Guillermo Varela has been included in Manchester United’s match-day squad to face West Ham.

It will be the first time the 22-year-old Uruguayan is named on the bench for Man United and is certainly a step in the right direction for his career prospects.

He spent last season on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla B side under Zinedine Zidane where he made quite a good impression and with United’s current injury problems, Louis van Gaal has seen fit to promote him into the first-team squad.

Varela is a right-back by trade so he will step in to cover Matteo Darmian and that may well be a hint that Paddy McNair is set to start at centre-back, as he’d be the right-back cover otherwise.

I’ll reserve judgement on Varela and whether he is good enough for our first-team but van Gaal has seen enough to give him the opportunity, so he must have been doing the right-things in training.

Varela will become the latest in a long string of youngsters who have been drafted into match-day squads following the likes of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Axel Tuanzebe.
