Former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa scored a late winner for Borussia Dortmund against the Reds next Champions League opponents, Wolfsburg.
Kagawa finished off a stunning Borussia Dortmund move in second-half injury time to secure all three points for the team currently in second place in the Bundesliga. It was a cruel blow for Wolfsburg, who will now have to regroup and recuperate in time for their crucial Champions League clash with Man United on Tuesday.
The Reds go into the game knowing full well that only a win will do if they want to progress to the first knockout round of the competition. After being held to a 0-0 draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford, United have no choice but to win in Germany and will be buoyed by Wolfsburg’s loss at the weekend.
Wolfsburg currently lead group B, just a solitary point ahead of United who are, in turn, one point ahead of PSV, who host CSKA Moscow on the final matchday. The German side currently lie in fifth place in the Bundesliga, 10 points behind Saturday’s opponents Dortmund and a full 15 off the pace set by Bayern Munich at the top of the league.
United head to the Volkswagen Arena not in the greatest form themselves, with three draws in a row leading them into the critical game. It could be Louis van Gaal‘s most important game as United manager yet and the side will definitely have to provide something special in order to qualify for the second round of Europe’s premier competition.
