Schweinsteiger signed for Man United this summer, reuniting with van Gaal, who was his manager at Bayern Munich. The 31-year-old decided to look for a new challenge outside of Germany and United fans were delighted that he chose Old Trafford as his preferred destination.
It is obvious that van Gaal has high expectations from a player he helped develop and has gone on to win countless trophies. Schweinsteiger has brought some much-needed experience to United’s midfield and he has been a key performer in the middle of the aprk. However, his manager is still not convinced that he is offering his team all he can.
“The reason why we have bought Schweinsteiger is because he’s a player who can lead and guide a team,” Van Gaal said.
“It’s not just because of his football abilities that we bought him. Until now we haven’t seen the best of Schweinsteiger, the player I saw at Bayern Munich.”
United fans have been happy with the performances from the first German to play for the club and his involvement in front of goal recently has been hugely helpful. Schweinsteiger forced a last-minute own goal against Watford as well as scoring the equaliser against Leicester City but van Gaal is still waiting for more.
The manager added: “I believe that in every match we have played he could have played better.”
It is an indication of how much of an impact van Gaal wants to get out of Schweinsteiger. The German national team captain has been United’s midfield general during his first few months at the club, mainly alongside another newcomer, Morgan Schneiderlin.
It may be about time that the midfielder starts really taking charge and asserting his leadership qualities on the rest of the team as they try to get their season back on track.
