Bastian Schweinsteiger facing potential ban for West Ham incident – report

by Sam Peoples

Bastian Schweinsteiger faces a three-match ban for an incident involving Winston Reid in Manchester United’s game against West Ham.

The Mirror reports that the decision hinges on whether Mark Clattenburg saw the incident in which Schweinsteiger allegedly elbowed Reid in the face. If he didn’t include it in his match report, then an independent panel can bring up a retrospective ban if they feel he deserved to be sent off.

Reid and West Ham boss Slaven Bilic both accused Schweinsteiger of purposefully elbowing Reid in the face but it would be up the the adjudicators as to whether they agree it had malicious intent.

For Man United, it would be a real blow at a bad time to have Schweinsteiger unavailable for three games against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke City.

Morgan Schneiderlin picked up an injury against West Ham so is a concern at the moment, Ander Herrera is also sidelined with injury and Michael Carrick has only just returned from one. Without Schweinsteiger in the side, Louis van Gaal could have real selection troubles in central midfield.

Not to mention we are going into the busy festive period where there is always a big pile up of games, so it’s a time where the squad depth of any team is really tested already before injuries and bans take their toll.

Right now things aren’t going well for United and Schweinsteiger being banned could be another hurdle we may have to overcome but there won’t be any decision made until Clattenburg’s report is submitted.
